Textual Illuminations Project (TIP)

During 2004-2005, Prairie Lands Writing Project (PLWP) received a NWP National Reading Initiative mini-grant which provided part of the support for our Textual Illuminations Project (TIP) professional development institute. TIP was an open institute offered in affiliation with the St. Joseph School District providing a focused study of reading, and especially research-based reading strategies for information texts, to help increase reading comprehension, and in turn, student success and achievement. TIP was designed as an inquiry-based experience for no more than ten teachers (grades 4-12+) to focus on their roles, processes and habits as readers within, as well as, beyond the classroom setting and to help them utilize that knowledge to inform and enhance classroom practices and instruction in the teaching of reading, especially in regard to various content areas.
